KL Hockey Club successfully defended their TNB Cup title when they came from behind to edge Tenaga Nasional Berhad 2-1 at the National Hockey stadium in Bukit Jalil.
Some 3,000 fans thronged the National Hockey Stadium to witness the clash of two of the most successful teams in the history of MHL. And lending support was Minister of Youth & Sports Khairy Jamaluddin who is the first serving Sports Minister to attend a final of MHL.
Its was TNB that opened scoring as Amir Farid Ahmad Fuzi weaved past three defenders, and evaded the diving Roslan Jamaluddin to slot into goal, to the joy of the TNB fans.
KLHC were on level terms off their first penalty corner in the 29th minute as Muhammad Razie played a ball to his left to Akhtar Ali who relayed it to a diving Mohamad Syamim Mohd Yusof who placed the ball past a despairing dive by S. Kumar.
In the 24th minute TNB were awarded a penalty stroke as Faisal Saari was brought down by Freed Ahmad and umpire K. Illango did not hesitate to point to the spot. But Faisal sent his flick wide of Roslan's right post and TNB squandered a chance to take the lead again.
In the 45th minute Illango blundered when he failed to spot a stick check by Mohd Amin Rahim on Nabil Fiqri Mohd Noor, awarding a penalty corner instead after consulting fellow umpire R. Anbanathan.
KLHC were awarded penalty corners in the 45th, 51st, 52nd and 64th minutes. And off the fourth penalty corner, the attempt by Muhammad Imran hit Mohd Madzli Ikmar on the foot and rightfully Illango awarded a penalty stroke.
Imran sent Kumar diving the wrong way to give KLHC a 2-1 lead. And they held on for a famous win.
